Dr. Thomas Mercer’s journey through the profession of dentistry spans over half a century, marked by unwavering dedication and continuous pursuit of excellence. Commencing his academic voyage after graduating from Dover High School, he successfully completed his Bachelor of Arts undergraduate studies at Gettysburg College. Dr. Mercer achieved his Doctor of Dental Medicine (D.M.D.) degree from the esteemed University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine, laying the foundation for a distinguished career ahead. His love for comprehensive learning led him to a General Practice Residency with the United States Air Force during the Viet Nam War, where he refined his expertise and demonstrated his allegiance to serving his nation.
Upon the completion of his residency, Dr. Mercer returned to his roots in Dover, DE, where he planted the seeds of his dental legacy. July 12, 1971 he unveiled his private practice specializing in general dentistry, a venture that has flourished for an astounding 52 years.
A lifelong learner, Dr. Mercer consistently pursued growth through more than 1,200 hours of graduate continuing education, a testament to his steadfast dedication to keeping abreast of the rapid scientific and technological advances.
Dentistry and the community of Dover have been very important to Dr. Mercer. After six years of religious and theological studies of Old Catholic Orthodoxy, he was ordained a priest in 2010. In 2011, he was appointed pastor of The Chapel of the Holy Spirit in Dover. He was consecrated a Bishop in 2019 and oversees other churches. His heart for community outreach and compassion culminated in the founding of The Hope Dental Clinic in 2007. The clinic’s mission of providing free dental services to those who may otherwise go without reflects his unwavering commitment to improving the lives of others. He wanted to extend a healing touch while giving back to the community that had blessed him so much.
