Thomas W. Mercer, DMD

Meet Dr. Mercer

After completing undergraduate studies at Gettysburg College, the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine, and a general practice residency in the USAF, I returned to my hometown of Dover, DE. I began my private practice of general dentistry in 1971. Counting the residency program in the USAF I’ve been a dentist for 47 years. With over 1,200 hours of graduate continuing education I keep abreast of the scientific and technological advances in dentistry.

After six years of religious and theological studies, I was ordained a priest in 2010. In 2011, I was appointed pastor of The Chapel of the Holy Spirit in Dover.

Over the years I’ve enjoyed many hobbies and activities. Among just a few of them are hunting, fishing and golf. Becoming a commercial pilot and certified flight instructor has been an incredible and most enjoyable experience. Aviation has been, and always will be, an important part of my life.

I am blessed and very proud of having four children (one adopted) and ten grandchildren. My children have become successful in their own right personally, as parents, and career-wise. It has been a very special pleasure to be a part of my grandchildren’s lives.

Dentistry and the community of Dover have been very kind to me. I feel that it is important to be a member of organizations that provide service and aid to mankind. As a way of giving back and as a part of my ministry, I founded The Hope Dental Clinic in 2007. It is a charitable organization that provides free dental services to those who qualify. Its generous volunteers donate their time and professional skills absolutely free of charge. Since its opening in 2007, the Hope Dental Clinic’s doctors, hygienists and assistants have provided free services to its patients having a street value” of almost a million dollars.
